Welcome everyone to the NEW and improved Gate 21! I’ve been working on this all week, and finally think I have it up and running. Hopefully, all of the links from the old WordPress-hosted blog will continue to remain active on the new address. Be that as it may, I am sure there will be some hiccups along the way, and there are still a few small things which need to be worked out.

At any rate, I hope you like the new look for the site and hope to bring you more ranting and raving in the very near future.

That said — at least for the time being — I imagine that my RSS feeds are going to be a bit screwed up.  Thus, please make sure and change your feeds. You can do that by simply using the following button:

At any rate, I now have 2 domains pointing to the same blog (as you will notice in the header at the top). You can now access Gate 21 at either: http://Gate21.net or http://Gate-21.com. If you have any problems, questions, or suggestions, feel free to drop me a line. If this site doesn’t look any different than it did in the past, then please click here and you will be taken to the new site, while the server changes get propagated.

In the meantime, hopefully I’ll be up to full speed soon…

Great Win for the BasketVols, and a Little News 17 January 08

  • Despite allowing a scrappy Vanderbilt team stay in the game a little longer than they probably should have, Bruce and the Barbarians managed to beat the No 16 Commodes of Vanderbilt 80-60 Thursday night. Wayne Chism stood out with 18 points and 18 rebounds in the nationally televised contest. There’s no question about it ladies and gentlemen: The BasketVols are for Real! Hats off to Coach Pearl and the BasketVols for another great win — their 10th in a row.

Vandy - comopet

  • On another Basketball note, the Vol Network has announced that Coach Pearl will serve as the color commentator for the Lady Vols game against Arkansas on January 24th. I for one can’t wait to hear Bruce help call the game — it’s bound to be entertaining…
  • Finally, there is a good chance that the blog will be down for a day or so, as I get ready to switch over to the new-and-improved Gate 21, in the next day or so. If I do everything right, all of the current links should continue to be active. Be that as it may, there is always a possibility that something might “go missing.” Thanks to everyone who has been reading for the last two months — I plan on keeping Gate 21 going as long as I can, and I hope you like the new site…

No, I Haven’t Forgotten About Basketball… 17 January 08

c14bb I haven’t forgotten about the BasketVols, and their upcoming match up with the Fightin’ Commodes of Vanderbilt. It is guaranteed to be a serious showdown as the 15-1 Vols put their Top-10 ranking on the line against that school in Nashville (God, I sound like Gerry DiNardo) Anyway, the game is on ESPN tonight at 7:00 pm, so go catch it. You can also catch a breakdown over at The BruceBall Blog.

As for my lack of attention to the blog this week, I am getting ready to give Gate 21 a major makeover, which hopefully will go live this weekend. Thus, I’ve been attempting to get the new site ready, and have — sadly — ignored the existing one somewhat. To both of my readers, (including myself) I am sorry for leaving you hanging this week.

Thus, please make sure you come back this weekend and give the new Gate 21 a look.

Until then…

Well … surprise, surprise, for once I was right.  Jameel Owens and Stacy McGee committed to Oklahoma, less than a week after being involved in Cheeba-gate.  I suppose getting nearly arrested on a recruiting visit didn’t bode well for the future for these two young men.

On another note, I have a few interesting things coming up for the blog which I have been working on this week.  Hopefully, I’ll have something new to show you by the weekend.

In the meantime, let’s hope that no more of the Vols decide to burn down in public…

Vols "Burning Down" Knoxville… 14 January 08

From VolQuest.com

Gerald Jones This just in:

Two Tennessee football players were cited on Friday night for simple possession of marijuana as they hosted a recruit on an official visit.

Gerald Jones was driver of a car which was stopped for a burnt out light. According to the report, officers smelled marijuana as the approached the Dodge Magnum

Officers received consent to search the car and found marijuana cigars inside the car including one which was partially smoked.

The passengers in the car were redshirt freshman receiver Ahmad Paige, redshirt offensive lineman William Brimfield and Muskogee, Oklahoma wide receiver Jameel Owens. Owens was in town for his official visit.

Jones and Paige were both cited for simple possession (a misdemeanor) and Jones was cited for not wearing a seat belt as well as the burnt out light.
Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer is going to issue a statement later today.

You know, a few single guys, out trying to have a good time … cruisin’ the town, takin’ in the sites, and burnin’ down on a doobie. Bad decisions, gentlemen, will get you in trouble. This is especially bad considering there was a recruit in the car.

I have full faith that the Great Punkin’ will mete out the appropriate penalty, but these guys have got to learn that they are on the front porch of the university, and can’t be out in the public embarrassing themselves and the program.

Don’t you just imagine that Jameel Owens’ family is not exactly going to be all that hip on their son coming to Tennessee … Damn!

To all you Star Wars Fans out there, this is one of the best voice-over jobs I’ve ever seen, and it is damn funny.  It’s a little on the long side, but it is worth it — I promise.

Obviously not sports related, but I just had to share it.

Of course there is that line about baseball…

Side Note:  I am in the process of trying to make a few changes to the blog over the next few days, so posts may be a bit thin until later in the week.  Be that as it may, I have a few things lined up for everyone…

It’s (Semi) Official … Dave Clawson is the new Offensive Coordinator at Tennessee 11 January 08

Posted by lawvol in Coaching Changes, College Football, Dave Clawson, News & Notes, Phil Fulmer, Rumor Mill, SEC Football, SEC Sports, Tennessee Volunteers.

It’s being reported that Coach Fulmer has tapped Richmond Spiders’ Head Coach Dave Clawson as the new offensive coordinator at Tennessee. As well as serving as the offensive coordinator, Clawson will also serve as the quarterbacks coach. Along with Clawson may come Latrell Scott, who served as Clawson’s assistant head coach and recruiting guru at Richmond. It is anticipated that Scott would be coaching wide-receivers at Tennessee.

Clawson impressed Fulmer and the nation as he lead the Spiders to 11 wins and the Football Championship Series (I-AA) semifinals where they were defeated by ultimate champion Appalachian State. Clawson is generally viewed as an offensive specialist who uses a wide-open attack. This represents a departure from the run-geared offense that Tennessee has run since … well, pretty much forever.

For what it’s worth (and that isn’t much) I am thrilled with this hire. The last thing Tennessee needed was more of the same — which is exactly what the other major candidate for this post, former Meee-che-guun offensive coordinator Mike Deboard, represented. This could be a turning point for Tennessee both philosophically and and in terms of wins and losses. This is exciting news, and bodes well for the future.

Given the fact that Clawson is young, it stands to reason that he might … someday … be a logical successor to the Great Punkin’.

Change can be a good thing. I’m glad Phillip Fulmer realized that — now we just have to see if he is willing to commit to it like he needs to. The way he does that is by letting Clawson have free reign over the offense, and maybe mix things up a bit.

This comes only a few days after Punkin’ hired Stan Drayton from Florida to take over as running backs coach. Whether Fulmer will hire a tight-ends coach, a special teams coach, or other offensive coach to round out the Tennessee staff remains.

Now it’s time to start getting ready for next season…

Update:

Well, it’s now official, and there is a great discussion of Clawson and his abilities over on Loser With Socks. Check it out.

For those of you who grew up in the 1980’s and 90’s, you’ll get this. For those of you who didn’t, well … doubtful.

Yeah, yeah … I know this has nothing to do with sports…

Darren McFadden has Run in With Police… 10 January 08

Arkansas Running Back Darren McFadden was handcuffed in a Little Rock nightclub brawl early Thursday morning. Apparently he was not one of the bruisers, at Ernie Biggs Piano Bar, but was trying to protect his little brother who was fighting. After being handcuffed for a while on the hood of a cop car, he was released without being charged.

I guess he must have run into some Missouri fans or something…

c14bb So, basketball season is now truly upon us. I know, I know, it’s been “upon” us for almost 2 months now, but with football’s bowl season over, it’s now time for the conference basketball schedules to begin. Tonight the Vols take on Ole Miss in what was probably not predicted, pre-season, to be a great game. Oh how the prognosticators were wrong.

The No. 16 Rebels have surprised everyone in the basketball world by posting a 13-0 record into the SEC conference season. This looks to be a key contest in determining the early running order in the SEC. Mississippi looks to keep their unbeaten record and prove to the national media that they deserve respect as they meet the Vols tonight at Thompson Boling Arena.

The Vols, on the other hand hope to repeat their 2006-07 undefeated home record versus SEC opponents. The Vols also want to keep the momentum they established during the non-conference schedule.

This game will definitely be a barn-burner, and the first conference test of two of the best teams in the SEC. For a more in-depth breakdown of the game, visit the Bruce Ball Blog, or UTSports.com.

Go Vols! Beat them old-gun-toting-funky-lookin’-beard-sort-of-guy Rebels!!!

Well, another college football season has come to a close, and LSU has been crowned the champion for 2007-08. The BCS Championship Game, though good, only serves to underscore why College Football needs a playoff. I never really thought that I would turn my back on the bowl system — I have had great experiences as a bowl-goer over the years, but this football season makes it clear that a playoff is needed now more than ever. More on that in a minute… First, a few thoughts on the game.

Well … this looks like a replay of last year’s championship game.

So far, Ohio State jumped out to an early lead (this time in the first minute of the game, as opposed to the first play of the game) and then proceeded to go straight down hill. Can’t say that I am surprised by the play of either team.

I am a bit surprised that Ohio State’s offensive line has been so out-matched after the second series.

I must say that — despite generally being a doubter — I am now beginning to believe the whole “Big Ten can’t hang with the speed of the SEC” line of thought. I guess there is something to that.

Glad I’m an SEC fan and alum, of course my wife went to Ohio State…
